Local Kansas City Needlepoint Business Expands, Acquires Neighboring Upholstery Business
Kansas City, Mo. — Kansas City’s local full-service needlepoint store, KC Needlepoint, has acquired long-time family-owned Décor Upholstery in the Waldo Business District. The acquisition merges two locally owned community businesses. The acquisition also allows KC Needlepoint to bring a portion of its needlepoint finishing operations in-house and back to Kansas City, shortening the time to completion for needlepoint pillows initially, with goals to expand. The added workspace brings additional room to train new staff and house its products for shipment as the business continues to grow.
“We started KC Needlepoint right here in our own backyards in Waldo with a dream to introduce a new generation to the joy of needlepoint,” said Polly, co-founder and co-owner of KC Needlepoint.
“Bringing Décor Upholstery into our business will allow us to get more of our products finished and delivered to customers much quicker and gives us the opportunity to continue the legacy of another Kansas City business. We know that this partnership will help us continue to spread the artform and craft that we love so much.”
Celebrating 50 years of Kansas City family-owned business in 2023, Décor Upholstery began as a one-man operation by Martin Serrioz in 1973. Quickly growing throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, Décor expanded to include a dedicated team of upholsterers, sewers and delivery personnel serving private homeowners throughout the KC metro. After Serrioz’s passing in June 2023, Décor’s remaining family owners and dedicated team members have continued his legacy of honesty and integrity serving their valued customers.
“My father built a successful business by making lasting relationships in the community and providing a level of customer service and craftmanship quality that is uncommonly excellent these days,” said Jeanne Roberts, Serrioz’s daughter and a Décor Upholstery team member since 1979. “When our friends across the street at KC Needlepoint approached us with this offer, we knew they were the exact right people to continue to build on the work and client relationships he cared so much about.”
KC Needlepoint began working with Décor shortly after it started the business in 2015. As the needlepoint business became more popular, they relied on Décor more and more to produce the finished products for customers in the KC area and around the country.
“While Martin was with us and still today, the Décor Upholstery team has always been the very best in the city at what they do, and we are so honored to have such a strong working relationship,” said Carol, co-founder and co-owner of KC Needlepoint. “We are so excited that they agreed to continue their work alongside our tight-knit KC Needlepoint team, and we are looking forward to the future of our shared businesses.”
Following its expansion into the Décor Upholstery space, the KC Needlepoint team is stitching up new product offerings including expanded canvases, specialty fibers and threads, needlepoint kits, in-person education classes and more.
